Finding a Cavachon Breeder: Some Questions to Ask
I get many requests for help in finding a breeder. When I was looking for a puppy, I did not know where to start. The first thing I did was check the local dog pounds to see what they had. I called several and none of them had any puppies at the time. So, I started an “informational search” to see if I could determine what breed would be best for our family. I had actually thought the Cavalier King Charles sounded really good and while trying to find out as much information about them as I could I happened to stumble across something about a Cavachon. Well, one look at a picture of one and it was love at first sight! Besides looks, however, the breed we chose needed to have good qualities that fit our family and our lifestyle. The more I read about Cavachons, the more excited I got and knew for absolute certain that a Cavachon was the right dog for us.
Once I finally settled on the breed of puppy we wanted I did an internet search for Cavachons breeders but did not find too many, and no local ones. I started looking at a couple of the more popular puppy adoption web sites. I made a list of potential puppies and potential breeders. Since there were none nearby, I knew I would either have to drive (alot) or have the little guy shipped.
Once I had my list, I tried to do research on the breeders going so far as to find the addresses (sometimes that was difficult) and using google maps satellite views to zoom in on the property to see what it looked like! I was so nervous about getting a puppy mill dog. Then, I called each of the breeders, telling them the puppy(s) I was interested in. I basically interviewed the breeder, I had searched the internet to help me figure out what I should ask. I had a list of questions ready, asked all of them, and took notes. Some breeders did not let a customer visit their place, that was an immediate red flag for me – I would want to be able to see the place where my puppy was born and nurtured the first few weeks of it’s life. Even though I knew I could not visit most of the places, I wanted to know that that would have been an option – I did not start out telling them I would not be able to go there.
I also asked about the parents of the puppy I was interested in – size, age, health, # of litters, anything else I could think of. I asked for pictures of the parents and a current picture of the puppy to be sent to me. If someone did not cooperate with my requests, again, it raised a red flag.
I wanted to know if Cavachons were the only type of puppies they bred. That would not necessarily have been a deal breaker, but a breeder who is completely devoted to only Cavachons was my preference.
Did they breed only F1 Cavachons? THIS I felt was very important.
I tried to find reviews, but most of the time the only testimonials were on the web site and I did not necessarily trust those, a breeder can post whatever they want on their web site and make it look real.
I ended up choosing a place that was in Iowa , I live in Ohio. The owners were a husband and wife team. To this day, I do not know much about the actual home, but in talking with them on the phone several – make that many – times, I was content with all of the info and conversations we had. They never made me feel like I was bothering them and welcomed my calls. I could often hear puppies in the background and I liked that, I figured it meant they were in the house. They would return my call if I left a message. They worked with me on getting Kasey on the airline and flight I asked for.
The puppy that was first on our list was actually gone by the time I made up my mind to pick the breeder that I did. I was very, very sad, but we knew we had better hurry and make our second choice quickly. Luckily Kasey (Casey back then) was still there and we put our deposit down immediately – I know now that is how it was meant to be
There are many rules about flying a puppy, they actually go as cargo. A breeder who ships their puppies needs to be familiar with those rules. The part of the plane they are in is temperature controlled but the outside temperatures still have mandatory high and low limits in order to transport them. The puppy also has to be at least 8 weeks old. We had Kasey shipped to us the day he turned 8 weeks as we were so anxious to get him.
Our story ended very well! We got a perfect little puppy who greatly enriches our lives every single day!
I know there are things I missed here. I will add more as time goes on, no doubt!

Foxglove Cavachons are simply the best- my mother has 2 Foxglove Cavachons and has recommended Terri/Foxglove to her friends and family. Everyone who has come in contact with my mother’s (& her friend’s) Foxglove Cavachons wants to know where she found such beautiful (inside & out) dogs. They are truly special. My family and I have been saving up- so, that we too can have the privilege of owning a Foxglove Cavachon in the future.

Thank you so much Libby for that thoughtful heartfelt letter, I wish every home I place a puppy in is like yours, like Marj’s,,, I have so many fabulous customers. I try to screen every home carefully, if the negative exchange was a real customer, I can’t believe how I missed the signs of such a personality, I would never have placed one of my puppies there. In 2012 we found my mom lying on her kitchen floor where she had been for at least two days,,, she had insisted on her independence and as her caregiver I had to step lightly or she became offended. She had a massive heart attack and to my sorrow was alone and ill for an undetermined amount of time. The period of time mentioned stating that I was hard to reach, that this lady was “disgusted with my ignoring her”, coincides with that terrible event with my mom’s life. If I missed a voicemail an email I would hope that a bit of understanding would be extended. I spend hours talking to Cavachon puppy people, it’s typically the best part of my day, my Inbox is filled with loving letters like yours, thank you for going to bat in my defense, God bless you.

You angel you! I finally finally heard from the moderator who indeed removed the first part of the post (because of inappropriate language), what about the poor dog was my reply? I’m waiting to hear back and have posted offering a full refund for the return of this Cavachon, again, if it’s a legitimate posting.
Marj, you and Libby (and Lori & Jill & Debbie Driscoll, Shirley Sanders in Texas) are who my customers are,,, IF I sold a puppy to this cruel sounding woman, has it been traumatized and terrorized poor baby? I’m not surprised it was hard to house train, I hope she replies and brings him or her home to me, I’ll keep you posted if I have a little one needing to find a LOVING home…

Thank you Libby for your sweet remarks, I love that my puppies bring much joy and are so obviously cherished and loved as part of the family. I was just astonished at the exchange mentioned, I work so hard to raise simply fabulous puppies, I want them to be easy to train and healthy, I’m passionate about that and have worked countless hours to make sure that each puppy I place is a delight.
That being said, it takes kindness, love and more than a bit of energy to finish training any puppy, a harsh and cruel attitude does nothing but traumatize and frighten a dog. I hope that the exchange was a bogus one, but if one of my sweet puppies is in such a home I have asked that they reach out to me and let me refund their purchase price and re-home that poor Cavachon.
You know, I pride myself on super communication with my customers, but I’m human and as I said earlier, I keep every email, (I have over 20,000 in my Inbox!!!) I spend hours (literally) on the phone with the multitude of people who want to know all about the Cavachon, I don’t regret any of that until I stumble across such an exchange. I was so shocked, it was like someone had attacked me physically, I have such amazing customers, it was stunning and made me not only furious but very very sad. What a world we live in. Thank you Lori for your kind words, I am so proud of my babies, my Inbox is full of pictures and proud puppy parents bragging about their super smart super trainable Foxglove kids. I was outraged that someone could talk about a dog in that way, I can’t find this person looking through thousands of emails back to 2012 (I keep EVERY letter!) I hope and pray that this isn’t one of my babies and only a fabricated exchange from a jealous dog breeder perhaps…
In my defense, if I did miss a letter or call in that time frame in 2012, it was during the time that my mother (I’m her primary caregiver) was found on her kitchen floor after suffering a massive heart attack. I sometimes receive up to 65 calls in a day, and emails abound as well Just this morning I spent almost 45 minutes with a lady from Toledo, I LOVE my puppy people, I would never deliberately ignore anyone for any reason.
