Cavachon Breed Info
While every dog is unique, dogs of the same breed often share many characteristics. It is obvious that dogs of the same breed have many physical characteristics in common, but they will often share some personality characteristics as well. The following Cavachon breed info will give you some important information about the various characteristics of this particular breed.
For starters, the Cavachon breed is a mix between a Bichon Frise and a Cavalier King Charles. Obviously, the Cavachon will share characteristics that are common in both of these breeds.
Size: The Cavachon is a small dog, typically weighing somewhere between 12 and 18 pounds. However, it is more common for a Cavachon to weigh somewhere on the higher end of that range, typically 15 to 18 pounds.
Fur: A Cavachon’s coat is very fluffy, thick, and often rather curly. Regular grooming is a must for the Cavachon due to the long length that their fur can reach, which can become as long as 3 to 5 inches. However, despite the Cavachon having longer and thicker hair than other dog breeds, they shed very little. The coloration of their fur can vary, but is most commonly various shades of white or brown. Spotting is very common in this dog breed.
Personality: The Cavachon is an active breed, often wanting to exercise and play. However, they are better than most breeds at entertaining themselves, which can ease some of the burden off of a less than active owner. The Cavachon is a very social dog breed as well, which would prefer to be in the company of other dogs or people rather than finding a spot where they can be alone. The Cavachon displays a great mix of activity and contentment, always looking to find a nice soft lap to rest in after some play-time!
Eating Habits: The Cavachon is a rather light and sporadic eater. They will be content with two small meals of quality dog food a day.
Training: The Cavachon is a very smart breed, able to quickly pick up on many tricks and follow obedience training very well.

My Cavachon (Katie) is 6 yrs and the most amazing dog. She looks more Cavalier than most. Her fur is fine & wavy, not curly. She does shed! My guess is about 10% Cavachons have fur like my Katie.
She has big brown eyes full of love. She thinks every person and dog is her friend. Her play is adorable. Katie will throw her toys in the air and then chase them. She tucks her butt under and plays like a cat. When playing with our other (Buddy) dog she nips on his rear legs to get him to run. It is so entertaining to watch.
She also loves my grand kids. The youngest is 4. She does hide behind me when she has had enough squeezing.
I cant say enough wonderful stuff about my Katie.

When they grow up they are bueatyful they have their own look it is very hard to say but they are a great dog for everyone to have who love adog who is loveable and enjoys to play

My parents and brother are both allergic to dogs, but I’ve wanted a dog in the house since I was about 5 or 6. I’m now 13 and I want to prove that not only am I responsible enough for a dog but that the dog we have won’t cause them to have a lot of allergy problems. Will a Cavachon cause a lot of allergies?

They are supposed to be a great breed for anyone with allergies. I have heard many, many testimonials of both adults and children with allergies to dogs that were able to have this breed in their home. It would be best to seek one out and see how it went with your family.

We have Tilly since she was 8 weeks old. She is now 8months old and we love her more than we can say.She is a happy healthy fluffy bundle of joy who just loves to be with us constantly. We only have one worry – I don’t think a mouse would survive on the amount Tilly eats She weighs 4.7 kilos and most of that is fur We’re very lucky if she eats one tiny meal a day. Our vet has seen her and said she is not underweight. Does anyone else have this problem. We always had Irish Setters who would eat for England so we’re used to greedy dogs. However much people say she won’t starve We WORRY.We would so appreciate comments and if anyone has a miracle answer to improving her appetite – she is excersised twice a day

A cavachon would be perfect! Although small they are so loving, affectionate, loyal and friendly – ours makes friends with everyone she meets 🙂 you should try and find the chance to introduce your dad to one, he would fall in love immediately (that’s how my sister convinced our mum to get ours!)

My cavachon Danny is a lovely boy but hardly small. He weighs 12 kilos at 7 months and stands about 16 inches high. All research said cavachons were small which was key to my decision, so beware !

By now you can be feeding her 2x per day. In the morning then at dinner time. Keep her water bowl full all the time.

My pupils 14 weeks old and is soiling and peeling in the crate at night. We have reduced the size of the crate but it didn’t help. Is he just too young to hold it or should we try something else. We do take him out before bedtime. Help

He is probably still a little young to make it through the night without a “potty break.” At around four months old he may be ready to make it 8 hours in his crate at night. Although, it may end up taking a little longer now because he has gotten used to going in his crate, which puppies really do not want to do. Be sure you clean it really well with pet stain cleaner that will neutralize the urine scent and take him out once during the night for a while.

Our pup soiled and peed in the crate until he was 4 to 4 1/2 months old. It helped to reduce the size of the crate. Ours came with an insert to reduce the area. When he got old enough, the soiling stopped almost overnight.

My pup is 13 weeks old and gets quite scared during the night could that be it? we have often come in to find that he has weed on the floor and is whimpering for us. Your pup could be waking up in the middle of the night, getting scared and soil his bed. We have left a little light on near his crate and he hasn’t soiled himself since. Hope this helps!

I had always had larger dogs before “Fritze” came into our life – and I’m still amazed at how loving, how nearly human-like the little guy is. He may weigh 18 pounds, but he thinks he’s 6’ tall and rising, case in point:
We recently moved up to the Sierra’s, near Lake Tahoe. Everything is different here, the outdoors, the altitude, the stunning scenery. The first month or so was a learning experience for all of us, with Fritze gleefully running and jumping and literally tucking in my wife and I into bed every night (he won’t lay down until we’re settled).
Later in Fall, we started to see a bunch of wildlife. I made a major mistake in leaving our back door open (with the kitchen smells probably wafting out?). All of a sudden, I heard furious, furious barking, like I’d never heard before. Then I heard scampering and an animal sound that was alien to me. While running into the kitchen from the living room, I witnessed Fritze, chasing a baby-teenager? Black Bear! (it was the size of a larger Rottie, probably was 150-200 lbs). When I reached the kitchen, the bear was munching on his food I guess, which made him miffed…then he chased the bear out the door, across the backyard and over the fence. My last view was Fritze barking and running pell-mell after the bear, with the bear’s fast-moving butt burning a memory hole in my mind as it easily climbed the 4’ fence…wow! The fence is out of commission now, btw.
Fritze is a keeper… He nonchalantly walked back to the house as if nothing had happened and demanded I brush him. That’s it – while I don’t think the inventors of Cavachon’s had ‘big-bad-bear-patrol’ in mind, he certainly paid his way for this family our last Fall afternoon, and we love him to bits.
Fantastic breed, brave, loving dog. It doesn’t get much better than this.

I have a Cavachon Millie who is 9 months now. She is so much fun and really a family pet. She loves to be with us all the time, but she also understands when it is bed time and sleeps in her cage quietly until we wake up. Would highly recommend one of these dogs .

Is there any difference if the mom is a cavalier king charles and dad a bichon or vise versa? I have seen some breeders that use a female cavalier and male bichon for breeding and some breeders using female bichon and male cavalier. Thanks!

A couple of things that I have heard are that by having the mom be the Bichon, it helps to produce the no to low shedding quality and also gives the “more desirable” appearance that people are looking for. Puppies usually have more physical characteristics from the mother. Also, the Bichon is more energetic and outgoing than the Cavalier, so the Cavachon with a Bichon mom retains a little more of that characteristic as well.
I do not know if any of the above is really true, it is just things I have heard and/or read.

My cavachon will be two in june. I have tought him to sit,stay and come to me at home, but when I walk him, if hes off the lead he doesn’t come back to me.Iv tried treats and his lead to come back but hes not interested,he runs around thinking its a game very frustrating. also we have a big garden and he always manages to find a gap through the hedge and escapes, I end up chasing him through the village to try and catch him it is becoming a big problem. any advice on training him to come back to me when hes outside the house.

my cavachon was like this but be patient. my boy now 2 years 6 months and has devoeloped into a great companion. much better on the lead and can reun freely always returns for a treat or if he is busy playing I just shout out goodbye and walk away – he soon returns. Be patient like Bichons cavachions are slow to mature emotionally. he is still very playful and needs lots of walks but is happy to be left for 5 hours and is calm when I return. not noisy but good house dog. Very clean. travels on bus and train. wears a harness in the car. Eats whatever whenever. totally undemanding. I had and loved Bichons for 20 years and find my cavachon much easier although sometimes miss the bichon sulks and drama.

Our trainer taught us to use an emergency word that is unique (we use DUDE). To teach it, put a treat in your fist and shake it low to the ground as you say the word loudly and very excitedly. When they come to you and touch their nose to your fist, give them the treat. It took our dogs about 3 minutes to learn this and it works like a charm when we need them to come to us.

My Cavachon is my salvation. I’ve had her nearly 2 years and she’s the perfect best friend. I keep her on a strict routine of walks and eating and treats which helps her being so well behaved. If she is on her own for longer than 4 hrs she will eat your face when you get home 🙂 Sadly she isn’t herself today. Since waking up this morning all she has done is lick droplets of water off my fingers and just slept. If she doesn’t improve by tomorrow it’s a docs appointment for her. Great breed of a dog! Even during sickness she loves you with her licking. Lets hope my little girl recovers soon.

Bella isn’t keen on eating from a bowl. Make it a challenge like putting it n an empty plastic bottle or kong. I think cavachons are just too smart for their own good sometimes!!!

Yes my cavachon mitzy is the fussiest eater. Shw won,t eat from a bowl at all and her food would be in the bowl for at least to days before she realises she has no choice.She has to be fed by hand and won’t eat any type of dog food.she will onky eat sausuges when cut p and won’t drink water from a bowl.she has stain around her eyes and we cannot get it off.
Any suggestions to why she is so fussy she ius 1yr and 1month

my male cavashon is going to be three and we found using this stuff called(eyeclens)this seems to work jojo, it takes theeye buggies off his face and as far as the dark spots look at their fur jojo has light brown around his eyes which gives the appearance of dark spots maybe your dog nay have the same don,t know, I am trying to find someone close to us who has a female and would like to mate them. Jo is the smartest dog I ever had.

My cavachon looks just like a cava. She even has the Blenheim spot on her head. If you can post a picture I would love to see it. What is her coat like. Bella is getting fluffier everyday.
