cavachon-dog-breed-info

While every dog is unique, dogs of the same breed often share many characteristics.  It is obvious that dogs of the same breed have many physical characteristics in common, but they will often share some personality characteristics as well.  The following Cavachon breed info will give you some important information about the various characteristics of this particular breed.

For starters, the Cavachon breed is a mix between a Bichon Frise and a Cavalier King Charles.  Obviously, the Cavachon will share characteristics that are common in both of these breeds.

Size: The Cavachon is a small dog, typically weighing somewhere between 12 and 18 pounds.  However, it is more common for a Cavachon to weigh somewhere on the higher end of that range, typically 15 to 18 pounds.

Fur: A Cavachon’s coat is very fluffy, thick, and often rather curly.  Regular grooming is a must for the Cavachon due to the long length that their fur can reach, which can become as long as 3 to 5 inches.  However, despite the Cavachon having longer and thicker hair than other dog breeds, they shed very little.  The coloration of their fur can vary, but is most commonly various shades of white or brown.  Spotting is very common in this dog breed.

Personality: The Cavachon is an active breed, often wanting to exercise and play.  However, they are better than most breeds at entertaining themselves, which can ease some of the burden off of a less than active owner.  The Cavachon is a very social dog breed as well, which would prefer to be in the company of other dogs or people rather than finding a spot where they can be alone.  The Cavachon displays a great mix of activity and contentment, always looking to find a nice soft lap to rest in after some play-time!

Eating Habits: The Cavachon is a rather light and sporadic eater.  They will be content with two small meals of quality dog food a day.

Training: The Cavachon is a very smart breed, able to quickly pick up on many tricks and follow obedience training very well.

Have a 27 week old female Cavachon and am wondering when can I expect her to come into heat?
She is just adorable, friendly, playful and does that cute ‘head tilt’ when she is spoken to.
My neighbour got her brother and they have regular ‘play dates’ hence my concern regarding her coming into heat, we don’t want any unwanted puppies, especially fathered by brother.

We are considering purchasing an 8-week old Cavachon from a dog broker. Can anyone recommend questions to ask of the breeder? He’s up-to-date on vaccinations. My wife is a teacher, so will be helpful to have her home to train him over summer. Any concerns with detachment when she goes back to work in 3 months? We have a cat at home that is rather territorial, how do Cavachons handle that type of environment? As I understand them, they are good with kids? We have an 18 month old child at home. Thank you for all the useful information here!

I have two Cavachons and they are by far the best dogs I have ever had. They get along with everyone and every other animal they have been around. You won’t be disappointed. The fact she will be home with him for three months will be wonderful! Good luck! There is a great forum on Facebook called Cavachon Forum that has tons of members and a lot of great information!

My cavachon named Maggie is turning 6 this year. She’s very gentle and sweet. She always needs attention and normally prefers being in the same room as someone else if possible. She sleeps with someone in our family every night, and if she can’t she’ll sleep outside your door. If anyone has young children and want a family friendly dog I would recommend a Cavachon. I don’t think my dog has ever bit a person in her lifetime, and she does great with children.

It totally depends on the personality of the individual not the breed. my 6 month old girl only barks when people knock or she sees other dogs out the window. But my boyfriends parents have a 7 year old girl and she barks constantly at everything.

I am so happy to find this site! I have had Romey for 3 years. What a delight he is! I am his 3rd owner (1st was a boyfriend of a friend; He gave him to my friend as a present. Then, she needed to move away and couldn’t take Romey with her.) By the time I got him, he was an adult, bell-trained dog. Absolutely precious! He sleeps on my bed, plays with my cat and keeps me entertained.
One of the cute things he does: When I’m talking to him, he tilts his head to the side. Like he is really understanding what I am saying. When animals come on tv, he is entranced and even occasionally barks at them.
We take long drives from Texas to Oklahoma several times a year. When we stop to potty, people go crazy over him.
Also, I bought a harness to buckle him up when we are driving. Often times, when I return to the car, he has released himself from the harness and sits behind the steering wheel. As if to say, “Where to madam?” LOL.

I have a 8 month old female named Bella. I am having a hard time with food. She will eat it for a little while and then will go on a food strike for a few days. I have changed it a few times but eventually she starts to eat again but very minimal. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? :/

Try Burns dry food for toy and small breeds, chicken and rice. They also do A sensitive pork and potatoes, if your dog does not get on with chicken. This food is done by a vet!

Try keeping her food in an air tight container. She probably doesn’t like it after it gets stale, which is why she always eats again the first few days after you introduce a new kind . Hope that helps . It worked for my boy . He was the same way!

Veterinary assistant here: unless there are any other underlying problems, she’ll eat when she’s hungry. No need to keep switching; just stick with one quality (preferably dry) food. And definitely no people food.

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this blog.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal.

I must say you have done a superb job with this. Also,
the blog loads extremely quick for me on Internet explorer.
    Excellent Blog!

We have a cavachon pup who is now just over 6 months, he loves cuddles and just wants to be sitting on our knees all the time. We all love him so much. He is so fussy with eating, i was feeding him our food mixed with his baker, just to get him to eat but now he refuses to eat his own dog food. I dont want to keep on giving him our food incase he develops health problems. Any help or advice would be great.

Bakers is the most terrible dog food ever made. If you can’t feed it raw, then at least get a high quality food. X

Yes, we bought a 10 week old puppy from century farm. The one thing I would recommend is go get your puppy and don’t allow them to put the puppy on a plane.
If we didn’t go get him, he would of laid over in two places for over 5 hours. He got sick 3 times on the plane and I can’t image if he was in his cage all by himself.
Our puppy threw up for the first two weeks, but seems to be getting better. They seem to have a great selection and very cute puppies.

My almost two year old cavechon is a great addition to my family. Two questions – one, he absolutely cannot be left alone for anytime at all as he will eat any food that is left out. Normally a great and well behaved dog, unattended, he will jump onto the counter with his long legs and eat what he is not supposed to. He know’s what he is doing is wrong as he will then march himself off to the crate. Second is his barking at strangers and other dogs when out. It is annoying and embarrassing and wonder if it is because he has not been socialized enough out of the home. When someone comes to the house, new or otherwise, he is friendly and manages not even to jump up as he really used to do all of the time. Thank you to anyone who can share an idea or two. I know for the food, the spray bottle would be a good idea when we catch him in the act but we rarely do as then we could prevent it! 🙂

I’ve just started looking for a new dog companion and the Cavachon appeals to me because it has a little longer snout and not so bulging eyes as the Cavalier?

I would love any animal, so looks are not very important but I do prefer a more pointy nose and not a smashed-looking face.

so then would you say this is generally true of Cavachon’s; more pointed snout and not as bulgy eyes?

You feed 2 to 3x a day. They will “go” more often because of young age or fillers in their food. Read the dog food label. By products go right on by your dogs digestion and out the other end. Many top name brands use by-products so Read don’t just buy a brand. The extra cost will result in less waste (literally) and a healthier pet.

What do you feed your Cavachons? I’m on to Science Diet. We had an issue with his ph and protein levels being dangerously high. I started on Natures Recipe but my vet insisted that was causing his issue. I have to take him back to the vet Mon after being on the Science Diet for a week.

Our Cavalier was also on dietary biscuits for crystals in her urine – possible problem with both breeds??

    Anonymous Replied:

Our dog is on Verus (may have to look online – but available locally here). Ask the Vet what in the food causes your crystal problem. You may be able to find something that doesn’t have it. Verus is a USA brand and our puppy has no issues. In fact, we had no transition issues from breeder to our house except the dog refused the breeders food and stole the cats’ food (Verus brand). So, I got the puppy Verus food. It is no fillers, corn, wheat, etc. It does use chicken meal but I’ve never gotten my pets to like Blue brand food. It is a bummer to have specialty food – we had a cat that needed it before.

She is on a diet of chicken mince, brown rice with carrot and broccoli. It doesn’t cost me much to cook for a week, is low fat and so good for her, and more importantly she loves it.

Dogs can’t process rice or vegetables. Just the meat is needed and should be raw,or it loses all it’s goodness in the cooking.

We have a 9 mth Cavachon named Bobby and I have to say out of all the breeds of dog I have had over the years, after getting Bobs, I wouldn’t have any other breed again! We have 5 children of vastly varying ages including a daughter with autism…eldest 26, youngest 8 and he adjusts his play to fit in with who has him at any given time. His intellegence and understanding of people and situations is just amazing.
He has been off leash for walks since he was 14 weeks old and has never struggled with recall, all I need to do is call his name, stand still and he’s back like a shot. I train him with lots of praise and cuddles alongside the odd treat when it is something new or he has done particularly well.
He positively thrives on love, praise and cuddles and adores being groomed, jumping onto the footstool as soon as he sees his brush and will also let me brush his teeth with one of the finger brushes.
This breed is a perfect all rounder, lively enough to keel the kids busy but also happy enough to settle on a lap for cuddles. Their size means they are not threatening to dog wary people and soon win over non dog lovers with their happy disposition.
We love him to bits !

Cavachons cost anywhere from $3.00 to $1500. Depending on the breeder. I recommend puppyfinder.com but do your research. I have two Cavachons and payed $350 for one and $750 for the other. It seems to me the puppies with darker colorings are more expensive. The ones with mostly white Coates are the least expensive.
