Cavachon Questions and Answers

Are Cavachons Hypoallergenic Dogs?

Hi,

I have allergies but I really want to get a dog. I’ve been researching different breeds and I keep reading that Cavachons are hypoallergenic. Is this true? Would a Cavachon be a good choice for someone with allergies?

Thanks,

L.

Hi L.,

This is a great question and one that many prospective Cavachon owners ask! The short answer is that while Cavachons are often marketed as hypoallergenic, no dog breed is truly 100% hypoallergenic. However, Cavachons can be a good choice for many people with allergies. Let me explain why.

Understanding “Hypoallergenic”

First, it’s important to understand that the allergens that affect most people aren’t actually from dog hair itself, but from proteins found in a dog’s dander (dead skin cells), saliva, and urine. When people say a dog is “hypoallergenic,” they usually mean the dog produces fewer allergens or sheds less, which reduces the spread of these proteins.

The Cavachon’s Parent Breeds

The Cavachon is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise. The Bichon Frise is considered one of the better breeds for allergy sufferers because they have hair rather than fur, and they shed very minimally. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, on the other hand, does shed more and is not considered hypoallergenic.

What This Means for Cavachons

Because Cavachons are a mixed breed, their coat type can vary. Some Cavachons inherit more of the Bichon’s low-shedding coat, while others may have more of the Cavalier’s characteristics. Generally speaking, most Cavachons do shed less than many other breeds, which can make them a better option for people with mild to moderate allergies.

Individual Variation

Every person’s allergies are different, and every Cavachon is different. Some people with allergies do wonderfully with Cavachons, while others still have reactions. The severity of your allergies and the specific dog you choose will both play a role.

Tips for Allergy Sufferers Considering a Cavachon

If you have allergies but want to get a Cavachon, here are some suggestions:

1. Spend time with Cavachons before committing. Visit a breeder and interact with their dogs to see how you react.

2. Ask the breeder about the coat type of the puppies. Puppies with curlier, Bichon-like coats tend to shed less.

3. Keep up with regular grooming. Frequent brushing and bathing can reduce dander and allergens.

4. Consider keeping certain areas of your home dog-free, like your bedroom.

5. Use HEPA air filters in your home to reduce airborne allergens.

6. Talk to your allergist before getting any dog to discuss your specific situation.

The Bottom Line

While Cavachons aren’t truly hypoallergenic, many people with allergies find they can live comfortably with them. Their low-shedding coats (especially when they take after the Bichon parent) and small size can make them more manageable for allergy sufferers than many other breeds. However, if you have severe allergies, it’s important to spend time with Cavachons first and consult with your doctor before making a decision.

I hope this helps with your decision! If you do decide to get a Cavachon, they make wonderful, affectionate companions.

Best wishes!
